Sodick Success Story

How Matrix Tool and Plustech Are Redefining What’s Possible in Micro Molding

A family-owned business approaching its 55th year, Matrix Tool has built its reputation on molding challenges other shops turn down. Since 2014,Matrix has relied exclusively on Sodick injection molding technology from Plustech for its most demanding applications. What began with a single 20-ton Sodick press in its Small Parts Molding room has grown to nearly 30 units throughout the facility, the majority of Matrix’s 40-plus machine fleet. Today, Matrix relies on
Sodick’s proprietary technology to manufacture highly complex, multi-cavity precision components with intricate micro features and exceptionally tight tolerances. That capability has become a competitive advantage, with many OEM customers specifically requesting production on Sodick equipment for their most demanding applications.

"We view our relationship with Sodick as a true collaborative partnership. Matrix’s design and tooling teams engineer mold layoutsthat push past conventional thinking – minimizing flow lengths, maximizing cavitation and reducing waste – while Sodick’s machinery brings that thinking to life with precision and repeatability. Whether on our production floor or under a trade show microscope, that combination speaks for itself. It shines brightest when we inherit a transfer mold trapped in years of debug loops – capable of one perfect part, but never a repeatable one – and get it running clean, shot after shot, within weeks. That’s usually the moment it hits our customers: Sodick equipment belongsin their own planttoo."

The Challenge

As precision molding applications became increasingly complex, Matrix Tool needed more than another injection molding machine – it needed a platform capable of delivering repeatable precision where other equipment often fellshort.

The company sought to:

  • Produce increasingly complex, micro-featured parts

  • Maximize cavitation while maintaining tight tolerances

  • Improve repeatability across long production runs and from one run to the next, even after a tool is pulled, cleaned and restarted

  • Increase manufacturing capacity without expanding floor space

  • Solve molding challenges others could not

The Solution

Matrix combined its engineering expertise with Sodick’s proprietary V-LINE® injection technology to create a manufacturing approach focused on precision, repeatability and innovation.

Roughly 10 percent of its 150-person workforce are degreed plastics engineers with nearly 200 years of combined experience. Applying lean principles directly to mold design, they engineer custom layouts with shorter flow lengths, tighter cavity spacing and leaner runner systems to maximize cavitation, reduce waste and deliver unexpected ROI. Sodick’s technology transforms those optimized designs into stable, repeatable production processes. As confidence grew, Sodick equipment expanded from the Small Parts Molding room to the primary production floor, where 20- and 60-ton units increasingly replaced conventional presses. Together, Matrix engineering and Sodick technology enable exceptional precision while allowing Matrix to grow production capacity within the same manufacturing footprint.

The Results

By standardizing much of its operation around Sodick technology, Matrix Tool has achieved:

Expanded manufacturing capacity

OEM customers who specifically request Sodick machine time for their most demanding programs

Increased micro-molding capabilities

The ability to solve molding challenges that conventional equipment could not

Superior shot-to-shot repeatability

Reduced material waste per part

Higher cavitation with consistent part quality

Improved efficiency through a smaller equipment footprint

Greater process stability

The Upshot

For Matrix Tool, Sodick has become far more than an equipment supplier – it has become a true engineering partner.

Together, Matrix and Sodick continue pushing the boundaries of what is possible in micro molding and micro-featured part production, solving complex manufacturing challenges while giving customers greater confidence in repeatable, production-ready processes. Perhaps the strongest testament to the partnership is its continued growth, from one Sodick press in 2014 to nearly 30 today, demonstrating a long-term commitment built on performance, innovation and shared success
